Great Spotted Woodpeckers, November 2006

One of the delights of our new garden is that Great Spots visit our garden feeders on most days.   Despite this they remain a novelty as we never saw them in either of our previous gardens.

Male Great Spotted Woodpecker in rather a stiff 'Victorian portrait' pose.   However, it does show the superb colouration well.

Female Great Spotted Woodpecker sheltering under a branch in torrential rain during a thunder storm.   It remained stationary in this position for over 15 minutes   This is something that I hadn't seen before.
